Much-loved comic is battling dementia

A member of the popular comedy troupe Monty Python has been diagnosed with a rare form of dementia, it was revealed over the weekend.

Terry Jones, aged 74, is suffering from primary progressive aphasia, which has impaired his ability to speak or communicate.

The news came as it was announced that the Welsh comedian, who directed hit films including Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life, had received an outstanding contribution award from Bafta Cymru.

Mr Jones had been among the surviving Pythons to reunite for a series of sell-out performances at London’s O2 Arena in 2014 and at the time indicated he was suffering memory problems.

The progression of the illness means it is unlikely that he will participate in any further live shows and it has also been confirmed that he can no longer give interviews.

Despite the sad news, his friend and fellow Monty Python star, Michael Palin, urged fans not to “write off” the comic.

In a moving Facebook post, he said: “Terry J has been my close friend and workmate for over 50 years. The progress of his dementia has been painful to watch.

“Not that Terry is out of circulation. He spends time with his family and only two days ago I met up with him for one of our regular meals at his local pub.

“Terry doesn’t say very much but he smiles, laughs, recognises and responds, and I’m always pleased to see him. Long may that last.”

Kathryn Smith, director of operations at the Alzheimer’s Society, said: “We are deeply sorry to hear about Terry Jones’ diagnosis of dementia and are thinking of Terry and his family during this time.”

Born in Colwyn Bay, the funnyman had started his comedy career while at Oxford University and went on to enjoy huge international success. In more recent years, his love of history has seen him present a number of documentaries on subjects such as the Vikings and Medieval life.
